Covid hairloss

As we find our way out of the global pandemic we all know as Covid-19, unfortunately, some are left with the aftermath of various lingering health conditions, one of which is covid hair loss. 

Telogen effluvium is a form of diffuse alopecia where thinning occurs throughout the entire scalp area; unlike androgenic alopecia that is a patterned hair loss according to genetics.

Every hair on our body has a natural growth cycle. When the follicles reach the end of their anagen growth phase, they disconnect from the blood supply. The hair then waits, somewhat stuck in the follicle chamber, to be shed when the new hair grows in to replace it. This is known as the telogen phase or shedding phase. 

When a shock to bodily systems occur the follicles can be shocked into prematurely shedding. This is known as Telogen Effluvium. This shedding phase usually manifests around the 3 month mark after covid subsides and can continue for 6 months or longer before new hair grows in.

The body should naturally resolve the shedding once it heals itself. However, in some cases the follicles get stuck in a dormant phase and remain inactive.
